All the 2021 Finish-It-Up Details and Looking Ahead At What's Next from Quilty Folk

It was a strange, bewildering year. A lot of us yo-yoed between depression and keeping our head down, just trying to get through. Why even bother with anger when the energy could be much better spent stitching our way to some sort of tranquility? Once again, I have been ever so grateful for this colorful, fascinating, soul-soothing hobby of mine. Though I often felt like the days were aimlessly drifting by, the 2021 finished quilts tell the real story. These hands of mine were busy, busy, busy....

I've been feeling a wee bit guilty about one particular quilt that ...

About Ready To Turn the Page To the New Year! from Quilty Folk

Got the Christmas Stars quilt into the hoop. Finally! I've been running so far behind on where the quilt line-up 'should be' this year that I just wanna shake my head. Not making a lot of progress on plowing through the completed quilt tops 'cuz I'm too busy making new.

Christmas Stars next up in the hoop
No matter. Christmas Day might be behind us, but I'm still very much in the mood to work on a quilt that looks like this. I made a total of four Christmas-look quilt tops within the last year and a ...

Christmas Napkins from Lily Patch Quilts

How was your Christmas? I hope you were able to spend time with those you love. We had a quiet day. Hubby and I stayed up till early morning to finish baking and wrapping gifts. I also was able to squeeze in some sewing. I’ve been trying to make reusable items for our home. I whipped up these napkins to go with Christmas dinner.

I had these fabrics laying around since last year. The Christmas fabric is flannel and the lining I used cotton. I washed them all the night before so they were ready to go. These were ...

Where Have I Been? from Lily Patch Quilts

It’s been a long time since I posted on here. I’ve been working quite a bit and haven’t had time to post. We also moved twice in two years. It’s been a little over 1 1/2 years since we moved to our new home. We have been so busy renovating  our home. It’s been a long road but we are so happy its’ pretty much done. I now have a dedicated sewing space that I’ve been working on getting organized so I can find my stuff/

I took some time last night to ...

Bullseye Medallion is Finished Up! from Quilty Folk

Loving this latest finish! When the last stitches went into the binding I thought to put it immediately on our bed. Alas, too many blue markings that needed washing out.

Love how the center turned out!
Thankfully it washed up very well and though there was a bit of dye in the Color Catchers, nothing seemed to make its way into the lighter colored fabrics.

The colors seem so intense, it's hard to see it in the pictures
I'm obviously very drawn to the look of circles in my quilts. This center motif was such a simple look ...

Cozier Looking Than I Thought It Might Be from Quilty Folk

Baby quilt is done, washed up and already gift wrapped! Big, big sigh here. It was on the get-done-before-Thanksgiving list and I didn't want to have to bump it off till Christmas or try and mail it through the USPS during the holidays.

Baby quilt is finished!
It's got a slightly different look than what I normally do for baby quilts, but it still seems to work. Definitely turned out to be cozier looking than I ever expected.  Crossing my finger baby's mama will like this one, though thankfully baby Ellie won't care a whit!

Hand ...

The Latest Cozy Quilt Finish from Quilty Folk

The Patchwork Garden quilt is totally finished up, binding and label on and already gifted! I stalled some on getting the binding on just because there were other projects that seemed more interesting at the moment.

Patchwork Garden is a true-blue finish!
It has such a soft, cozy feel to it, I just love it! Why didn't I make one of these years ago? All the background fabrics have white, light gray, light blue, light green or very light purple tones. I've been stocking up on them for years and finally found a place to experiment. Ooh la ...

One of the Baby Quilts is Finished! from Quilty Folk

This baby quilt was finished up right before I left town to spend time at my oldest sons in Oregon. Though it wasn't gifted until I returned home, it felt really good to attach the label and check it off the list.

Baby quilt finished up!
It has a sort of busy, young vibe to it, so hopefully will grow well with baby. My baby quilts usually end up somewhere around 42-44 inches wide and 46 plus inches long. Plenty of quilt to be used in a toddler bed.

My little brother has gotten more baby quilts from me ...

A Little Bit of Applique and A Brand New Completion! from Quilty Folk

First things first, right? This past week has been for working on the Crazy Daisy blocks. Finally got the petals totally sewn down.*Whew! Thought that might never happen! Then it was time to cut out the flower centers. The bright citrussy greens just hit all the right notes so here they are, sewn onto the flowers by machine. No reason not to sew them raw edge style as the darker brown arches will be hand sewn down directly over the tops.

Crazy Daisy Blocks almost finished up!

Those arches are already cut out and ready to go. Gotta get ...

It's Always a Pleasure to Switch Out the Old Quilt in the Hoop For a New One from Quilty Folk

This quilt has been in the hoop for longer than any other quilt in years. So very happy to see it finally come to a good finish and give me an excuse to move on to another quilt! It's an AHIQFlowers prompt where I took great liberty in the interpretation of one of those intriguing Unconventional & Unexpected scrap quilts.

AHIQFlowers quilt finish!

As you can quickly see when looking at the picture of the original quilt, there were no flower shapes involved in the original make. Somehow though, {to me}, the scrappy mess down on the lower right corner ...

So Where Were We? from Quilty Folk

So I was afraid that this would happen. Even though this quilt has been finished for weeks, somehow the time was just never there for posting. And my eleven year blog anniversary was July 19, 2021! Oh well. Sometimes life takes a turn and all we need do is try and keep up!

Roman Stripe #1

This quilt was a result of just wanting to do something {anything really!} with a stack of fabrics that had been marinating together for years. I finally settled on this coin setting just to keep things simple and quite possibly fast forward the completion ...

Plodding Along from Quilty Folk

There's not going to be a lot going on here quilty-wise in the next month or so, but hopefully I won't go completely dark! No matter what else is happening around me, I can usually squeeze in a bit of hand quilting, so there's that.

Sweet Hospitality is done!

The latest quilt finish is Sweet Hospitality. It's been in the quilt top stage since late in 2018. I loved the old fashioned pineapple blocks when I first started them, but somehow, somewhere, the quilt lost its pizazz for me and then, more or less became a ...

Starting the Summer Out With a Finish! from Quilty Folk

Lots going on here as usual, just not much in the quilting department. I've spent the last two weeks either getting ready to go camping, actually camping, or cleaning up from camping. Whew! So much work, especially after a year off and kind of losing sight of the tips and tricks that make things more efficient.

Rhi's dress quilt is done!

I'm talking about the annual church campout thing we do clear up in the mountains. It takes place at an old Boy Scout camp and most every structure is somewhat primitive. That's why it's ...

Hand Quilting Time from Quilty Folk

It seems to be all that I can do to work in a just a little bit of hand quilting time lately. Life is just busy, busy for us right now! My brain is missing the relaxation of hand work so much, but what do you do?

Sweet Hospitality in the hoop

I couldn't decide how to stitch the pineapple quilt until one day it occurred to me to try the freehand 'hills' look again. Really takes the pressure off to do something amazing with it, but as usual, I was on pins and needles until finishing up the ...

It's a Wrap! from Quilty Folk

Last week found me taking pictures in anticipation of another blog post and then life just got way too crazy. Still running very behind with household chores, errands, bookwork etc., so I'm doing this as quickly as possible.

Wing and a Prayer is done!

Wing and a Prayer is now completely finished up, including being washed and achieving that wonderfully crinkle goodness! Don't know why, but it's suddenly in the 'favorites' group!

Scraps a few plus a few orphan geese

Not exactly springlike, but still, very bright and cheery! This improv. quilt was a great project, start ...

So Much Fun to Finish up a Forever Project! from Quilty Folk

Well, all good things must come to an end. The HST Medallion quilt is completely finished up! All 102 inches! One of those projects started sort of by impulse, but not really. I'd looked and looked and LOOKED at a picture of an antique quilt, wistfully thinking about how cool it would be to own one.

HST Medallion is done!!!!

Then one day, it just happened. I found myself putting together the centerpiece of a four year long project! It happened in fits and starts of course. Things this complicated always do around here.

A lot going on with ...

Quilted Placemats from Seaside Stitches

Buona festa della donna! (Happy International Women's Day!)

I just finished six quilted placemats for my sister. When she saw the ones I made for myself last summer, she asked for a set. Here are three of my six. We've used them almost every day since July, they've been washed a bunch of times, and still look great. They are improv pieced from scraps, which I find extremely entertaining. The straight parallel quilting lines hold everything together nicely.

Here is Anita's set. She loves neutrals. I was able to use some of the fabrics that were ...

Intriguing Interleaves from Seaside Stitches

What a fun workshop this was! Mel Beach taught Intriguing Interleaves to Ninigret Quilters via Zoom in February. It is a quilt-as-you-go method, which means when the piecing is done, so is the quilting! How satisfying to have a completed project so soon after taking a class, and not another UFO for the pile!

Mel is an outstanding teacher who utilizes all the technology at her disposal to maximize student engagement in the virtual environment. She's the best we've seen since we started Zooming in April 2020.

I'm not going to get into the process here, but ...

Celtic Shamrocks from Seaside Stitches

I made a table runner and I'm blogging about it within 24 hours!

After a successful Celtic applique workshop with Scarlett Rose in January with Ninigret Quilters, I went all in on Celtic! There's a big, beautiful Valentine wall hanging that is on hiatus. I wanted to practice quilting on something less important, so I started this shamrock piece.

I drafted this design in EQ8 by tracing some stock Celtic drawings I found online. The block finishes at 7.5", which was pretty small for those inside loops, even with 1/4" bias. Playing with plaid was fun ...

First Finish of 2021! from Quilty Folk

Woohoo! Comfortably Quirky is the first finish of 2021! I was starting to wonder if there would ever be one. This quilt was started in December of 2019. The general thinking was that this would be another 'Christmas' quilt for the seasonal stacks, but now that it's totally completed? Not so holiday-ish looking after all.

Comfortably Quirky is finished!

In fact, it's residing very comfortably on my bed right at this moment. This quilt got its design genesis from a rather funky looking quilt in the Roderick Kiracofe book 'Unconventional and Unexpected'. {Look at the December link earlier ...
